If you’re like me, you love to cook or bake or BBQ or just be in and around the kitchen throwing together dishes and meals to no end. You sometimes ‘share’ photos of what you made or ate with others on Facebook and marvel at the attention they garner, am I right? And sometimes, friends and family often suggest you start your own website or blog to share all the delicious and tasty dishes and recipes from! Sounds like a great idea [you quietly murmur to yourself, but where in the world do I even start with something like that?]
It’s EASIER and more AFFORDABLE than you think!
I like checklists, numbered lists, you name it, as long as its something that’s not too confusing and that I can follow along with minimal effort. So with that being said, I have arranged an easy-to-follow list of exactly what you need to do, to start your own blog and get to sharing those wonderful recipes and food photographs for all to see!
1. CHOOSE & PURCHASE A DOMAIN
First thing you need to do, is to come with a good DOMAIN NAME, like I have here – PieAddict.com. But first, a few things to keep in mind when selecting a domain name:
- TRY to use relevant keywords in the domain. This will make it easier for someone to find your blog when searching. Don’t know what ‘keywords’ are? See ‘ADDITIONAL RESOURCES’ below.
- Make sure there are no hard words to spell
- Don’t include any symbols
- Try to choose a domain with the ‘.com’ extension. You will see that there are a ton of extensions to choose from (i.e. .org, .net, .ninja, etc.), but ‘.com’ is still the most popular.

2. PURCHASE A HOSTING PLAN
The next step after you have an idea what you want your domain name to be is to pay for some space on the Web to house your blog.
There are literally hundreds (maybe more…) of web hosting companies out there. You can either just pick one at random to use or you can take recommendations from friends and associates…like us! Everyone has good and bad experiences with web hosts, so like anything you’ll probably get mixed reviews from every web hosting company you come across.
I will tell you however, that Bluehost [affiliate link] is one of the best, and I know this from direct experience.
Some of the reasons why Bluehost has always been one of my TOP go-to web hosting services?
- They have an excellent 24/7 Customer Support Team
- Everything is backed with a 100% money back guarantee
- Their site is laid out nicely to make purchasing your domain and hosting plan easy as pie!
HERE ARE SOME SCREENSHOTS I’VE PUT TOGETHER TO WALK YOU THROUGH THE WHOLE PROCESS OF BUYING A HOSTING PLAN:
Visit Bluehost and select the package that most meets your needs. Don’t just think about what you’ll need now, but think long term as well.
Select whether you’ve already registered a domain from somewhere else and need to transfer it, or if you need to purchase and register a domain.
Fill out your personal information.
Double check the Bluehost hosting plan you chose and fill out the billing form with your credit card information.
On the next screen, specify whether you want any additional variations of your domain. For instance, you might’ve been able to register mywebsite.com, but just in case you also want – mywebsite.net, mywebsite.org, etc.
Either way make your selection and complete your purchase. You will have to come up with a password so that you can access your web hosting information and account at anytime, but after that, you’re done! You now have a domain name and your blog has a home on the Web now!
3. INSTALL WORDPRESS
Now that you have a domain name, and space set aside on the Web for you blog, let’s get the actual BLOG software WORDPRESS installed?
